This is a book to read during every season, but I find myself gravitating towards it at the end of every year and the beginning of the next one. It’s the natural time for many to retreat, to explore restorative activities and to re-group and rebuild. Katherine May writes about how she achieved that and how she ‘Wintered’ through difficult times.
I remember reading this book for the first time and marvelling at the things that Katherine May could do to ‘Winter.’ Things I could never dream of doing, sights I could never imagine seeing such as the Aurora Borealis. The underlying message of the book was still powerful and still resonated with me, but many have criticised this position of privilege. But this year, in my very own back garden, I saw the Aurora Borealis. So many of us in the UK did (and many more slept through it!). I went out into the dark night, into the middle of nowhere, and spun under the lights that were showing up across the country. And I realised that Wintering is what you make of it. The power of that night lasted for days, weeks even, my favourite colour changed in an instance (it’s Aurora now) and I felt renewed and restored. And I hadn’t even left the country.
Wintering is what you make of it, and Katherine May shares her very personal and insightful experiences to help others change their perspective, and weather their storms and difficult times through to calmer moments. It’s about how we repair at the end of the year, season, or period of our lives. There is something for everyone in this honest and authentic book of healing and inspiration.
About the Book
Wintering is a poignant and comforting meditation on the fallow periods of life, times when we must retreat to care for and repair ourselves. Katherine May thoughtfully shows us how to come through these times with the wisdom of knowing that, like the seasons, our winters and summers are the ebb and flow of life.
