Lisa Jewell – one of the authors at the top of my ‘fabulous authors’ list! I have read so many of her books and been hooked every single time – never disappointed – and this book is no exception.
Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighbourhoods in Bristol, England; home to doctors and lawyers and old-money academics. It’s not the sort of place where people are brutally murdered… But it is the sort of place where everyone has a secret. And everyone is watching you.
As the headmaster credited with turning around the local school, Tom Fitzwilliam is beloved by one and all—including Joey Mullen, his new neighbor, who quickly develops an intense infatuation with this thoroughly charming yet unavailable man. Joey thinks her crush is a secret, but Tom’s teenaged son Freddie—a prodigy with aspirations of becoming a spy for MI5—excels in observing people and has witnessed Joey behaving strangely around his father.
There are a couple of back stories in this book that lead to the final answer to the all important question of ‘Who did it…’ However rather than your typical murder mystery, there are lots of different avenues that this book could go down and a handful of suspects as well as a handful of potential victims. Crimes committed years ago versus crimes committed in the here and now are all explored in this twisted and suspenseful psychological thriller.
