Ahh Amanda Prowse, you’ve finally written a main character that I mostly didn’t like! And I LOVED that! There was a familiarity at times (uncomfortably so) and the feeling of being able to relate. She was crafted in such a way that there was a huge amount of sympathy for her situation too. It was a mixed bag of emotions from me!
Amanda usually achieves relatability through likeable main characters (who are always very realistic!) so it was refreshing to read through a book where the main character had a lot more flaws. The underlying message of the book (or messages as there are many!) is poignant. What will you do with this one life that you have? Are you living the life you want, or the life you think you want?
Once you find yourself thinking about these things on a higher level than just the book, you realise that Amanda Prowse has done it again – fully immersed you into a story that can’t help but mean something to you, somehow. All of the ingredients of Amanda’s beautiful writing are firmly here, with a little more drama, good amounts of family, love and tender moments.
About the Book
She wants it all. But life has other plans…
After years of hard work, Madeleine’s life is very nearly perfect. She’s about to move to LA to pursue her dream job—and there’s a new man on the scene too. But when her mother falls ill, pulling her back to the world she’s tried so hard to leave behind, the repercussions of a life-changing decision Madeleine made seven years ago resurface, threatening to jeopardise everything she’s worked for.
Faced with the promise of her new life, and the pull of her old, she has to ask herself some tough questions: was what she did then right for her family? How do you know when it’s okay to put yourself first? And what’s the cost of happiness?
Heartfelt, provocative and emotional, this is a gripping look at the choices women have to make, and whether we really can have it all…
