When I heard that The Worst Witch was going to be the latest edition to the Clothbound Classics collection I was both excited and a little alarmed at how quickly the years have gone by! But yes I really did read this for the first time almost thirty years ago. Shocking! And it’s now a classic?! I had to re-read and I wasn’t disappointed even almost three decades on.
You can read so much into this novel. On the surface it’s about a young and imperfect witch, clumsy, trouble with balance and facing constant criticism and bullying. Jill Murphy either deliberately or not, portrayed a character with a disability as a main protagonist, something that was by far ahead of her time when this was first released. For readers looking for a bit of magic without a heavy storyline and complexity, this is a perfect series. It’s entertaining, engaging and light with playful undertones but great representation.
