We’re delighted to have a second book review for February from avid bookworm and book club member, Keighly – (Keighley_reads).

My second choice from the lovely Tea Leaves and Reads bookshelf – The Morrigan by Kim Curran. A couple things drew me to this book from the start. Firstly, when looking at the blurb for the book, it sounded different to my usual pick of young adult/fantasy. I do love a bit of mythology (though mainly Roman), so I thought it would be interesting to read a story involving Irish mythology. Secondly, I also loved the cover. The version I had was a proof copy, but the author has managed to carry the green theme into the published version. Having seen the published version, the author has captured The Morrigan perfectly. With her red hair and black raven wings, she is everything I pictured when reading the book.

If you have seen my review on my bookstagram, you will see that I LOVED this book. The book is a beautifully written narrative of the Irish Goddess Morrigan. The retelling of her life from the very beginning, as she lands on the coast of Ireland with her people, is captivating and memorising and the author writes in a way where you can visualise every scene and every character. Throughout the book you feel Morrigan’s rage, anger and love, which just makes you want to continue reading.

I think this book will become one of my top recommendations of 2025, and we are only in February! Its focus on a strong female character makes it extremely relevant in today’s world.

Ruler. Mother. Goddess. Warrior. Morrigan was all of them and more.

About the Book

They called me The Morrigan. I was magnificent. I was multitudes.
They twisted my story, stripped me away. But I will tell it now in my own voice.
It begins, as all the best stories do, in darkness.

From an ancient, storm-tossed sea, a tribe of gods reach the rocky shores of Ireland.
Among them, a strange, hungry, red-haired girl. A girl who can change shape, from bird to beast to goddess. A girl who dreams of battle, of blood, of death and power.

She does not know yet that a woman who seeks to rule will always be in danger – or that there are far more treacherous figures in this land than the gods who raised her.

She does not know that one day love will burn so deep in her heart that its scars will never heal. That she will know pain so raw and pure it will almost tear her apart.

She does not know that her journey will take a thousand years. That her name will be remembered for a thousand more.

She is The Morrigan, and she is waiting: a girl with rage coiled in her chest. Beautiful, powerful, ravenous rage. A rage that will live forever.
