“It’s not always enough to lean in because that s*** doesn’t work.” – Michelle Obama
This book highlights what many of us already know but haven’t yet found a way to describe – that there is nothing easy about finding your way through a world loaded with obstacles that others cannot or do not want to see. Whether your obstacle is your class, race, gender, religion, disability or something else, differences will often proceed you and your personality, when you enter a room.
What I took from this book the most is that whilst it is draining and exhausting to overcome, it’s not impossible. A book filled with hope, and a toolbox of things to help keep that going when it feels extremely difficult. Rather than a ‘Do this’ approach, Michelle shares her personal toolkit and experiences, with anecdotes relating these to key events in her life. There’s a great insight into her marriage, her position, and her upbringing.
NB: I don’t think you need to have read ‘Becoming’, her first book, before this one. I think it’s a conversation that continues and flows throughout both.
