The opening of this book had me hooked from the very first lines – it’s explosive – quite literally! A summer house falls into the sea (and we’re not talking your typical summer house in the back garden). From there, we work backwards to the present day again, to figure out exactly what led to these circumstances. And if they were absolutely not predictable.

Louise Candlish has picked a topical storyline, focusing on the rich Londoners who buy up coastal holiday homes pricing locals out of the market. It’s August, it’s prime holiday month, and the locals who are regularly scrabbling for housing, are protesting. It’s a very modern book, current issues, language and characterisations. Whilst it was a slow burn (after that explosive start) it picks up pace again pretty soon. There are secrets layered within secrets and the unravelling is magnificent. You’ll love to hate most of the characters. Readers tip – write them down – there are many!

About the Book

Charlotte and Perry have owned their clifftop holiday home in Pine Ridge for years. They’ve worked hard for it – why shouldn’t they enjoy it? Even if the locals can’t afford to live in the village these days…

Now city friends Amy and Linus have bought a second home nearby and when the two families descend, they plan lazy days at the beach and evenings sipping rosé and watching the sun set from Charlotte’s summerhouse veranda.

But this summer is different. A group of locals – headed by the charismatic Robbie – will stop at nothing to make the second home owners pay for their holiday. By the end of their break, marriages will be torn apart, friendships shattered and crimes exposed.

And one of them will have lost their life.
