From the snowy winter woods to the bright midnight sun; from lost and powerless to finding your path, Now She is Witch conjures a world of violence and beauty – a world where women grasp at power through witchcraft, sexuality and performance, and most of all through throwing each other to the wolves.
‘Feminist witch’ is becoming a very popular sub-genre of magical-realism/fantasy at the moment and it can be quite overwhelming to pick out the best with so much to choose from. But this was absolutely fantastic – with a beautifully quilted together storyline and strong characters. Kirsty is truly a word-smith and her talent with creating a world so different from our own but that runs in parallel in so many ways – is astonishing.
It’s important to note that this isn’t another retelling or interpretation of a witch trial – there are many books covering such topics (some fantastic books of course), but this is about the atmosphere, the legends, the fact that women don’t have a choice in the roles that they played and the way that witches fit in, or don’t, with society. There’s no defined time period either nor setting. It has a Nordic, cold feel to the story but nothing specific. In this way it is more of a vivid tale of a life that might have occurred, sometime, written in beautifully lyrical prose.
If you’re looking for your next Audiobook – this is narrated by Kirsty Logan herself, and is such a compelling listen. I always love hearing writers read their own books because they know exactly where the emotive and powerful bits are.
I always think that ‘for fans of…’ suggestions are very subjective, but quite often I like to browse books that are similar to ones I’ve enjoyed so I find it helpful to see references to similar Authors. This is great for readers who enjoyed The Witches of Vardo, Weyward, C J Cooke – in particular – The Lighthouse Witches, A Witch In Time and Payback’s a Witch.
About the Book
Lux has lost everything when Else finds her, alone in the woods. Her family, her lover, her home – all burned. The world is suspicious of women like her. But Lux is cunning; she knows how to exploit people’s expectations, how to blend into the background. And she knows a lot about poisons.
Else has not found Lux by accident. She needs her help to seek revenge against the man who wronged her, and together they pursue him north. But on their hunt they will uncover dark secrets that entangle them with dangerous adversaries.
