It has been over six years since I read one of Freya North’s books, and why oh why did I wait so long. They have always been firmly in the five star reads list and Little Wing is no exception to this. I’m so glad to have discovered Freya’s writing all over again.
This book, like so many of Freya’s other publications, is gently gripping. It wraps itself around your heart whilst you are reading it, endearing you to beautiful settings, loveable characters and unravelling secrets. It is quite simply a book from Freya’s heart and that is very clear throughout every chapter.
How did I feel when I read this? Quietly hopeful. I ached when Nell did, I felt Dougie’s exasperation, and I could sense Florence’s frustration at the little bits of her past pushing into her present and causing confusion. I felt this books emotions like I was completely and wholly part of it all. It was beautiful from start to finish. It did, I feel, achieve exactly what Freya North set out to achieve.
About the Book
Little Wing is the powerful story of two families over three generations.
In the 1960s, a pregnant 16-year-old is banished to one of the remotest parts of the UK. Years later, Nell and Dougie are both at critical moments in their lives when their paths cross. Between Camden, Colchester and the Outer Hebrides, the three story lines collide when secrets are uncovered and answers sought.
Little Wing is a novel about resilience, forgiveness and the true meaning of family, about finding one’s place in the world and discovering how we all belong somewhere and to someone.
