Books about tragedy will often focus in on the close-knit immediate family, the ones left behind. But this book goes a step further and is a character study not only of the family, but also the town at the centre of an eleven year olds disappearance. The community as well as those close, becomes a character all of its own, and that is a very clever thing to be able to convey through the written word.

It’s a slow-burn thriller, gentle in delivery but sucker-punching in content. It’s desperately sad and explores the impact of grief, loss and the ‘not knowing.’ The atmosphere of the small town is fully captured in the writing, and the turmoil of the ones left behind is so acutely raw that you can’t help but absorb some of it into your own feelings.

If you’re looking for a mystery with twists and turns, this is not it. It’s gently contemporary, a book within a book, two timelines, simple in delivery yet completely complex through the vivid prose.

I love books set in North Carolina, even desperately sad ones! And Marybeth Mayhew Whalen has just become a new favourite Author.
