The third in the ‘Merry’ series, this can easily be enjoyed as a standalone novel or as part of the trio. It was so lovely to be back in a familiar setting with relatively familiar characters, and a few new ones too. I felt that this was the most hard-hitting of the three novels, as we find Merry’s life about to change and also secrets unravelling for her friends in the sub-plot too.

The main theme of family, togetherness, and love, shone through, despite the happenings. The characters were also raw and flawed, and I also liked that. At times I didn’t really like Merry and the normality of feeling that was refreshing. Characters cannot, afterall, be fairytale perfect all of the time!

There was a good amount of Christmas / winter magic but not too much to make this a festive read, more of a winter one. It’s also worth researching the trigger warnings for this book if you’re not sure about the topics, because it was as I said at the start, quite hard-hitting. But Cathy Bramley doesn’t shy away from reality and the realism of this book made it all the more stronger.

In the snowy market town of Wetherly, Merry is about to take on her biggest project yet – the arrival of a new baby. She has always dreamed of being a mother, since losing her mum at a young age. Everyone is so excited, so why is Merry feeling terrified?
