The 2023 International Booker Shortlist has been announced and includes works originating in six countries across four continents, two debuts and a final novel.
The panel of judges for the International Booker Shortlist is chaired by French-Moroccon Novelist, Leila Slimani. The panel also includes Uilleam Blacker, one of Britain’s leading literary translators from Ukrainian; Tan Twan Eng, the Book-shortlisted Malaysian Novelist; Parul Sehgal, staff writer and critic at the New Yorker; and Frederick Studemann, Literary Editor of the Financial Times.
The Winning title will be announced at a ceremony at Sky Garden in London on Tuesday May 23rd 2023.
The Shortlist
Still Born by Guadalupe Nettel – a gripping and insightful fourth novel exploring one of life’s most consequential decisions – whether or not to have children. Translated by Rosalind Harvey.
Standing Heavy by Guaz – a unique insight into everything that passes under a security guard’s gaze, which also serves as a searingly witty deconstruction of colonial legacies and capitalist consumption. Translated by Frank Wynne.
Time Shelter by Georgi Gospodinov – a ‘clinic for the past’ that offers a promising treatment for Alzheimer’s sufferers: each floor reproduces a decade in minute detail, transporting patients back in time. Translated by Angela Rodel.
The Gospel According to the New World by Maryse Conde – a miracle baby is rumoured to be the Child of God. Award-winning Caribbean Author Maryse Conde follows his journey in search of his origins and mission. Translated by Richard Philcox.
Whale by Cheon Myeong-kwan is an adventure satire which sheds new light on the changes Korea experienced in its rapid transition from pre-modern to post-modern society. Translated by Chi-Young Kim.
